It’s been on the table for a long time, but earlier this month, the Welsh Government announced the whole of Wales will become an NVZ, to start being phased in as early as this spring. This will impact farming practices across Wales…

The purpose of NVZs is to protect the environment from diffuse pollution of nitrates, which cause significant detriment to water courses if over applied in the field and not taken up by the growing crop. Being in a NVZ means you a limited as to how much organic and inorganic fertiliser you can apply, including manufactured fertilisers and organic manures such as slurries, FYM, composts and anaerobic digestate. You are also under tighter restrictions for storage.

Around two thirds of England has been in a NVZ for many years, but until now, only a tiny fraction of Wales has been subject to these limits. The Welsh Government has been criticised for the timing of this decision, at a time when businesses are suffering from the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.
