4R Group has been appointed to manage the remediation of a former car service and garage facility in the centre of York. This development site is due to be transformed into a luxury hotel and apartments. Prior to construction there is a requirement to ensure that historical legacy contamination from the previous land use on this site is fully remediated and cleaned up. The site is situated adjacent to the river Foss so 4R applied for and obtained environmental permits from the Environment Agency to allow workings to take place adjacent to the river. Furthermore, given the location in central York there remains a high degree of archaeological interest in the site and as such we have a continual watching brief from archaeologists. Initial oil/ fuel tanks have been removed and trial pits and bore holes undertaken to inform the remediation strategy. The decontamination works are programmed to be completed by late summer 2019 with construction programmed to take place shortly after that.
